Three Fantastic And Easy Fried Turkey Recipes For This Thanksgiving
Millions of Americans will be cooking turkey in the next few weeks as my favourite holiday of the year rolls around... Thanksgiving. While many will probably stick to the tried and tested roasted-in-the-oven recipes, many brave people will be trying new and creative methods to cook their holiday turkey, such as grilling, smoking or even deep frying turkey.
Deep fried turkey may sound a little strange if you haven't tried it yet, but if you're a fan of crispy turkey skin, then you'll love deep fried turkey. Or if you prefer dark meat, fried turkey legs and wings will become your new favourite Thanksgiving dish. Regardless of whether you are a fan of white or dark meat, here are some turkey fryer recipes that will be sure to wow you and your family this Thanksgiving:
Super Easy Fried Turkey Recipe
If you like a more traditional turkey, you'll love the simplicity of this fried turkey recipe.
Ingredients for Super Easy Fried Turkey:
Peanut oil for frying (follow the fill line in your turkey fryer, but for most fryers it will be approximately 3 1/2 gallons)
1-10 lb turkey (12 lbs max)
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
Louisiana Style Deep Fried Turkey Recipe
I love spicy foods, therefore this Creole seasoned fried turkey recipe is one of my favorites.
Ingredients:
Peanut oil for frying (see directions for your turkey fryer for exact amount, but approximate amount should be three gallons)
1-10 to 12 lb turkey, whole
¼ cup Creole seasoning
1 white onion, whole
Remove the neck and giblets from the turkey; rinse and pat dry. Rub the turkey in and out with the Creole seasoning. Place the turkey and the whole white onion in the fry basket. See the Standard Turkey Frying Directions below for instructions on how to cook the turkey.
Deep Fried Rosemary Turkey
That is a more sophisticated fried turkey recipe, great if you're trying to impress the in-laws!
Ingredients:
1 (10-12 pound) full turkey
1/2 cup minced garlic
Salt and pepper to taste
3 gallons peanut oil (or as needed)
3 sprigs fresh rosemary
12 cloves garlic, peeled
1/2 cup chopped fresh ginger root
Directions:
Rub the turkey with the minced garlic, sale and pepper, on the inside and outside. Fill the hollow space of the bird with rosemary, garlic cloves and the ginger. Marinate for half-an-hour in the refrigerator.
Remove the herbs and garlic from the turkey and discard. Follow the standard turkey frying directions below. Enjoy!
Standard Turkey Frying Directions:
* Heat oil to 350 degrees F. Ensure that the fryer is placed outdoors in a safe place (flat dirt or grassy surface away from the house, wooden decks or other flammable surfaces).
* Trim any extra skin away from the thawed turkey. The neck hole should be minimum 1 inch in diameter. Pat the turkey dry, then rub liberally with salt and pepper on both the inside and outside. Place the turkey neck-side first into the fry basket.
* Lower the basket into the hot oil, gently and gradually. Make sure the hot oil completely covers the turkey.
* Cook for 3 1/2 - 4 minutes per pound. For a 10 lb turkey, it should take roughly 35-40 minutes to cook the bird.
* Remove the turkey from the oil and insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh to measure. Temperature will be 180 degrees F.
* Allow the turkey to rest for 15 minutes before carving.
